What is your involvement on campus?
I am a member of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. I am also on the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Team. I hold two on-campus jobs. I am Peer Academic Coach in the Learning Services office and a Desk Assistant with Housing and Residence Life.
What made you decide to pair your two academic majors?
I am fascinated with both subject areas. I think our country needs more people who are informed in both of the Sociological and political arenas.
What are some exciting aspects of this current year?
I am excited to take some of the upper-level classes in my major. The Ultimate Frisbee Team is getting more intense as well. It is exciting to take everything to the next level in regards to both academics and engagement. It is also exciting to be living in the DC area around the time of the presidential election.
What is your favorite undergraduate course at Mason?
I am currently enrolled in Sociology 101: Introductory Sociology. I have always been interested in the meanings behind every day social activities and traditions. It is amazing to learn how activities transform into what is now considered normal behavior.
Who is your favorite instructor?
I have developed a great relationship with Dr. Lisa Gring-Pemble. I met her at new student orientation as an incoming student and we have kept in touch ever since that point. She wrote my letter of recommendation for the internship I completed this past summer. I hope to take a course with her in the future focused on the presidential election.
Can you tell me about your undergraduate internship experience?
I interned on Capitol Hill in DC with the House Democratic Caucus. I helped prepare for the weekly meetings and was able to interact with the Democratic members. I also assisted the press team with videos, news clips, and press releases. I learned a great deal about how the members of Congress interact by observing their actions first-hand. I was able to apply the information I learned in my courses to real life situations.
Can you tell me about your upcoming study abroad experience?
This upcoming spring break I will take part in the Mason study abroad trip to Cuba. I will travel across the country to different Cuban cities with my fellow Mason classmates.
What are your career goals after graduating from Mason?
I would like to pursue a graduate study aboard experience through either the Fulbright or Rhodes scholarship. I would love to study social innovation and economics in a foreign country. It would be great to complete this experience somewhere in Europe.
What is the most exciting thing you have done in the DC area?
I was able to see President Obama up close at a presentation he made to the Democratic representatives before an important vote. I almost cried I was so excited. Also, when my parents came to visit, I was able to get us on a tour of the White House.
