Students to Present Scholarship at 2012 College Symposium

All students, faculty and staff are invited to the 2012 Undergraduate Research Symposium, held by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences on Tuesday, May 1, 2012. The symposium will run from 12:00pm-4:30pm in Dewberry Hall.

Undergraduate students from the college, with varying class years and majors, are responsible for all research presented at the symposium. The Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office believes that this year's event will be bigger and better than any past symposium. Research proposals, submitted to the college for presentation at the symposium, were based on class projects, research papers or independent work under the supervision of a faculty member.

Students present their research by creating poster displays or delivering oral presentations. A college faculty panel will select award winners for cash prizes in a number of categories.

Jamie Cooper, associate dean of undergraduate academic affairs in the college, had good things to say about the student participants and their research during the 2011 symposium.

“In talking with the students about their research, it was very clear that they were excited to share their projects with the University community. They all seemed very invested in the research beyond just having to complete it as part of a course or graduation requirement,” he said. “The event showed that our students have developed a keen understanding of how their research and the research process can contribute to their discipline and the local and global community.”
