This year, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences plans to feature a new group of students during its annual scholarship showcase.
The Celebration of Scholarship, a reception to honor and recognize college students who excel in the classroom and community, will take place on Monday, Oct. 24 from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Mason Hall atrium. As it does annually, the college will honor winners of the Dean’s Challenge award, who excel academically while helping the outside community and taking on additional responsibilities.
“This is our annual event to recognize some of the outstanding achievements of our students,” said Jamie Cooper, associate dean of undergraduate academic affairs in the college. “Dean’s Challenge winners excel academically, contribute to society and take our message to the public.”
In a new development for this year’s event, the college will recognize freshmen who excelled academically during the 2010-11 school year. The recipients of the student awards receive a stipend to help with their educational expenses.
“This is one of the times we get to bring students together to acknowledge their achievements,” Cooper said. “We are inviting the students, parents and faculty who nominated the winners. We really want the community to know all the great things our students are doing.”
